1.Cienfuegos

This peaceful city, three hours southeast of Havana, is a great place to slow down and mingle with Cubans. The youngest city in Cuba, Cienfuegos was founded in 1819 by French settlers from Louisiana. Many key sites to explore are located on the Parque Martí (the main square), including the cathedral, neoclassical Teatro Tomás Terry, and Museo Histórico Provincial.


2. Santa Clara

Santa Clara is a must for anyone interested in the revolution that overthrew the Cuban dictator Batista and brought Fidel Castro to power in the late 1950s. Here you’ll find a seven metre tall bronze statue of fellow revolutionary Ernesto Che Guevara overlooking the city from a nearby hill top . This is often seen as a turning point in the revolution and is therefore an important historical point of interest whatever your political views.


3. Vinales

A tiny town with a huge influence over the rest of the country, Vinales is where the very best tobacco is grown for the biggest cigar brands. Cohiba, Montecristo, Cuaba – they all use the leaves grown in this valley.From the mountains surrounding it to the little dance club behind the main square, Viñales epitomises regional Cuban life.


4. Baracoa

Baracoa is sometimes known as the First City, and it was the very first capital of the island. Baracoa was founded in the early 16th century by famed explorer Diego Velazquez, and it retains much of its colonial architecture. Baracoa is also a great base for visiting El Yunque, a mountain overlooking the city where visitors can hike.
