Beautiful Laos is one of the prettiest countries in Southeast Asia but also one of the least visited. Laos provides a pleasant change of pace for travelers who are used to Thailand or Vietnam.



This small Southeast Asian country has stunning scenery, from Limestone Mountains to dense forests and spectacular waterfalls. It’s a great place for adventuresome travelers or those who don’t mind roughing it. Laos’ popular tourist spots including sacred Buddhist temples, old French-colonial heritage districts, and gorgeous riverside scenery. Laos is known for its forest and its waterfalls and you can also try the delicious local food which has Thai and Indian influences.

1. Vientiane

The Laotian capital of Vientiane, located on the Mekong River, was a French colony at one time, so visitors can expect to see traces of French influence, including street signs in French.


The most popular tourist attraction in this city, also known as “the city of sandalwood,” is a Buddhist stupa, Pha That Luang, which dates back to 1586. There are also other attractions that are well worth a visit such as sprawling local markets and temples like Wat Si Saket which is the oldest of its kind in Vientiane.


2. Vang Vieng


Vang Vieng is a tourist city about a four-hour drive from Vientiane. One of the main reasons to come to Van Vieng is to enjoy the tubing down the Nam Song River and you can take in the lush jungle scenery here at the same time. Vang Vieng is popular with backpackers who enjoy the relaxed atmosphere as well as hiking in the hills and exploring caves. Ethnic villages, including Hmong, are located close by.


3. Luang Prabang

This laid-back town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its exquisite Buddhist temples, French colonial buildings, and riverside setting. The most popular city to visit in Laos, Luang Probing is an historic city that once served as the capital of the Kingdom of Laos. The city is surrounded by spectacular scenery of lush, green covered mountains, colourful flowers, sacred caves and waterfalls. There are several waterfalls nearby, some of which offer elephant rides to visitors.


4. Pakxe


Pakse is the capital of Champasak Province and one of the largest cities in the southern part of Laos. Pakxe the third most populous and best city in Laos to visit. It is also the capital of Champasak District with a population of 88,166 people. The town lies on the Mekong and Sedone rivers and you will find delicious seafood restaurants dotted along the waterfront as well as herbal saunas for which the area is also famous.
